Holy Island Tour

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just off the coast of Northumberland, is a true magnet for visitors from far and wide. Intriguingly only accessible via a causeway at low tide twice a day, it was the cradle of English Christianity in Anglo Saxon times and has remained an important site of pilgrimage to this day.

Although any day trip culminates in a visit to the island itself, the journey there is equally stunning: it follows the magnificent coastline of the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lined with impressive castles or castle ruins such as Warkworth, Dunstanburgh or Bamburgh, it also boasts charming fishing villages, the Farne Islands, a seabird haven and miles of sandy beaches.

A short detour via the hinterland offers a spectacular contrast to the serene coastal views with the Cheviot Hills looming among the surrounding moorland and a brief glimpse of the historic capital of the county, Alnwick and its spectacular castle, home to the Dukes of Northumberland for over 700 years.

Oh, by the way, let us know if you wish to walk over to Holy Island via the pilgrimage path (approx. 2h walking time) and if there is anything on the island that is a must-do for you. We will ensure you have the perfect experience when visiting Holy Island and the Northumberland coast.

At Newcastle Tour Company, the safety & health of our guests are always of paramount importance to us. This Holy Island tour has been optimised for post Covid-19 tours & follows our health protocols.

BAMBURGH, FORMER CAPITAL OF THE NORTH
Passing through typical Northumberland bucket-and-spade seaside villages with views of our “Galapagos of the North”, the Farnes Islands, populated by thousands of breeding sea birds, we’ll stop at the picturesque village of Bamburgh. Its majestic castle towering on top of an outcrop of dolerite rock was once the seat of the Anglo-Saxon kings of ancient Northumbria.

OPTIONAL: PILGRIM'S WAY TO HOLY ISLAND
Ever since 635, when King Oswald gave the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to St. Aidan to establish his monastery, the island has been a place of pilgrimage. The sight of the poles stretching across the sand and mud is one of the most iconic views in Northumberland and to walk the route away from the road and follow in the footsteps of our medieval ancestors is a wonderful experience.
